Semiramis’ Golden Pigeon (English) in: EuropeGreek

In the centre of both stands another golden statue, not at all like the other statues. It has no shape of its own, but bears the forms of the other gods. It is called the ‘standard’ by the Assyrians themselves, who have not given it a name of its own, nor have they anything to say about its place of origin and form. Some connect it with Dionysus, others with Deucalion, yet more with Semiramis, for on the top stands a golden dove: that is why they say the ‘standard’ belongs to Semiramis. It makes a twice-yearly journey to the sea to fetch the water in the way I have described.
